It was 2:07 AM.
Most of the town was quiet, except for the hum of a far-off streetlamp and the occasional crack of a possum stepping on a fallen branch. But deep in Clover Hills Cemetery, two women tiptoed between headstones, armed with a flashlight, one stolen crowbar, and a duffel bag full of terrible decisions.
Mira whispered, "I can't believe I let you talk me into this."
Jolene, holding a thermos of black coffee like it was holy water, hissed, "We are not grave robbing. We're... retrieving family property."
Mira eyed the shovel sticking out the bag. "That sounds exactly like grave robbing."
"Semantics."
They stood before Leona's freshly packed grave, a mound of dirt still slightly raised and framed by two bouquets - both fake.
Jolene exhaled. "Leona, please forgive me."
Then she stabbed the shovel into the earth.
Meanwhile, in the in-between...
Leona Monroe was sprawled out on a celestial bench, sipping something that looked suspiciously like a mimosa and watching them like it was live TV.
Rodney hovered beside her.
"Shouldn't we stop them?"
"Nah," she smirked. "Let the girls work. Ain't nobody saved my peace when they threw me in there with all these lies."
Rodney raised an eyebrow. "You put a flash drive in your casket?"
Leona turned, eyes twinkling.
"You think I went out like no punk?"
Back at the grave...
Thirty minutes later, Mira's back was soaked in sweat, and Jolene's nails had broken clean off.
Then -
CLANK.
Metal hit something.
Jolene gasped. "Oh God, that's it."
With nervous reverence, they unearthed the casket's lid. The engraved brass plate read:
Leona J. Monroe - She Warned You.
Mira wiped dirt from the edges. "You really did, didn't you?"
Jolene's hands trembled as she pried the panel open. Inside the satin lining, nestled between her hands...
A lavender velvet pouch.
Mira snatched it and unzipped. The USB drive was inside, sleek and black, with one word scratched in silver across the casing:
"BOOM."
Suddenly - a voice.
"HEY!"
Both women screamed and spun around.
It was old man Freddy Jenkins, the cemetery caretaker, wearing a housecoat and holding a shotgun as long as his leg.
"Y'all outta y'all damn minds?!"
Mira yelled, "We're her sisters!"
"That don't mean you get to dig her up like a damn potato!"
Jolene waved the drive. "She left something behind!"
Freddy squinted. "If she wanted it back, she shoulda put it in her will - not her damn corpse!"
But before he could say more, a strong gust of wind shot through the cemetery. Flowers scattered. Freddy's shotgun dropped.
Jolene whispered, "That's her."
Mira nodded, clutching the flash drive.
"We got what we came for. Let's go before she starts flickering streetlights."
At home...
Back at Mira's, with shaky hands and greasy fingers, they plugged the flash drive into an old laptop with duct tape on the hinge.
A folder popped open.
DO NOT OPEN UNLESS YOU'RE READY FOR THE TRUTH.
Inside:
"Affairs_List_Receipts.pdf"
"PastorLangston_CommunionScandal.mov"
"CousinTrina_Ain'tMyRealCousin.docx"
"VoiceNote_ToMySisters.mp3"
Jolene clicked the last one.
Leona's voice filled the room:
"If you're hearing this, it means y'all really went back for me. Bless your nosy little hearts. But this ain't just about secrets. It's about peace. My peace. Yours too. We all been quiet too long, suffering in silence while smiling in family photos. Play the files. Tell the truth. And let the church say AMEN with their whole lying chest."
Jolene blinked back tears.
Mira muttered, "This is bigger than us."
Across town…
Langston Monroe sat in his office, trembling. His phone buzzed.
A text from an unknown number.
No words.
Just a video.
He opened it.
And there he was… on screen… behind the communion table with Sister Melanie… grinning like sin in 1080p.
And in the Between…
Leona lifted her glass and smiled.
"You thought death would shut me up?"
She turned toward the glowing hallway of light.
"Baby, I just got started."
