The moment Mira pressed play, a chill rippled through the air like a ghost exhaling.
Her laptop screen flickered once, then filled with static, then - suddenly - there was Leona Monroe, bold as ever, sitting cross-legged in a red velvet chair like she was hosting her own afterlife talk show.
She looked good. Disturbingly good.
Hair curled, lipstick sharp, eyebrows arched in defiance. Behind her was a black backdrop with gold trimming that shimmered like divine drama.
"First things first," Leona said, leaning into the camera. "If you made it this far, Mira, that means I trusted you. I chose you. Not Jolene, not Tasha, not fake-ass Brother Langston. You."
Mira sat perfectly still, eyes locked on the screen.
"But I also knew you'd hesitate. You always did. You're loyal to a fault and slow to anger - unless it involved me. And sis… this involves me more than anything ever has."
Leona reached under the table onscreen and pulled out a folder. She tapped it with a long, ghost-pink nail.
"This folder contains what really happened that night. The night y'all keep pretending was an accident. Spoiler alert: it wasn't. And before you go thinking this is all some haunted guilt trip… nah. This is a blueprint."
She paused, her eyes hardening.
"Because someone in my circle killed me. Or tried to."
"And if I'm not dead - well, let's just say there's still time for fireworks."
Mira's hand tightened around her coffee mug, the steam suddenly feeling like it came from a volcano.
Leona smiled - sweet, crooked, savage.
"Now let's get into it. Flashback time."
The screen blinked and suddenly cut to surveillance footage.
The date: three weeks before the funeral.
The place: Leona's apartment.
Time: 2:13 a.m.
A shadowy figure appeared at her front door. Hoodie. Gloves. They didn't knock. They had a key.
Mira gasped. She knew that walk.
They crept inside. No forced entry. No signs of struggle. Just smooth, calculated movement. They poured something into a glass on the counter. Moved things. Took a file from under the couch. Left without ever looking at a camera directly.
But Leona had motion sensors. Hidden angles. A backup recording system on a private server.
"Told you I was paranoid," her voice chimed in over the video. "Can't be out here trusting folks with birthday cake smiles and murder in their back pocket."
The screen returned to Leona's message. She leaned forward now, serious.
"I don't have long. The battery on this flash drive was janky as hell. But listen - go to the red box at my storage unit. Not the regular one. The one under my name 'Lenora M.' Password is the year I found out my dad wasn't actually dead. You'll know what to look for."
"Inside is my insurance policy. My revenge recipe. And a list of people who had motive to kill me."
"Start with the preacher."
The video cut off.
Mira stared at the black screen, her own reflection looking back at her like a stranger.
Meanwhile, in the Between...
Leona floated above the city like smoke laced with glitter.
She followed Mira's energy like a beacon - pulling her down toward secrets that burned hotter than hell and colder than the fridge in her Aunt Rae's house.
Rodney, her spirit guide, hovered beside her with a bowl of ghostly popcorn.
"You know," he muttered, chewing thoughtfully, "if this ends in another exorcism, I'm retiring."
"I'm not haunting people," Leona snapped. "I'm educating them… aggressively."
"You're dangling drama from the grave like it's Black Friday."
Leona grinned, eyes locked on Mira pulling out her keys and grabbing a jacket.
"She's going to the unit," Leona whispered. "She's really doing it."
Rodney sighed. "And what happens if she finds the wrong thing?"
Leona's smile disappeared.
"Then she dies too."
Back in the living world…
Mira stepped into the freezing metal hallway of a shady storage facility tucked behind an abandoned strip mall. The overhead lights flickered like a warning.
Unit #374 was unassuming. Dusty. The lock was rusted but responsive.
She typed in the password.
1-9-9-7.
Click.
The red box inside looked like a cooler. Plastic. Heavy. Labeled "Old Tax Files" in terrible handwriting.
Inside were:
A burnt Polaroid of a baby shower… with Leona smiling next to a woman whose face was ripped out.
A black USB labeled "DO NOT WATCH ALONE"
A second letter with her name written in red Sharpie.
And a small velvet pouch.
She opened it slowly.
Inside was a wedding ring.
Not Leona's.
But Mira knew who it belonged to.
Her stomach dropped.
Leona, floating above her, whispered:
"You didn't just lose me. You lost the truth."
